Retevis RT27 Walkie Talkies Reviewed

There are many outdoor activities that one can do to feel like a happy child again. Most of us know the feeling to be outside until dark and having practically unlimited energy for various games. Well, who says that as adults we can’t have fun anymore? I have friends who enjoy activities like kayaking, climbing, fishing, hiking and others and combine all these activities with non-stop chatting via walkie talkies. You’d be surprised how practical, yet fun way of adding excitement to outside activities it can be.

Retevis RT27 Walkie Talkies

If you are looking for a pair of walkie talkies that are beginner friendly and can be used freely in your country, then stop for a second and consider Retevis RT27. These little machines can be used in the UK and other European countries freely, as they are PMR446 license free.

So without further ado, let’s see what they have to offer.

Features of Retevis RT27 Walkie Talkies

As I have mentioned above, RT27 are fully compliant under free walkie talkie European law, which means you can use them legally in European countries and the UK.

The construction material is a durable alloy metal, which is designed to withstand falls from certain heights and also effectively dissipate heat. The RT27 come with two charging methods, meaning you can charge directly the walkie talkie or just the battery separately. Inside the RT27, we can find a high fidelity audio unit, which offers clear and loud sounds from both receiving ends.

They can be considered security walkie talkies, since they come with 16 channels and DCS/CTCSS privacy codes, which secure your private channel and prevent the talkies from receiving unwanted outside communications. Additionally, they come with the VOX function, so you can also communicate hands-free.

Here you can check a video guide on how to set VOX:

If you get caught in a storm, don’t worry, the battery-side is equipped with a waterproof rubber ring, which prevents the battery from short-circuiting. The power contact is made of alloy-copper, which will not be oxidized easily (unless you are caught in a tropical acid rain storm, but I guess in such a case the walkie talkies will be the least of your worries).

Here is the list of specifications and features the Retevis RT27 walkie talkies offer.

Now that we are familiar with the technical side, let’s see what owners of these machines have to say about the practical usability.

What Do Users Say?

One of the things most owners agree on is the size and weight of the talkies, which is quite good. RT27 are very lightweight and fit an average-sized hand just fine. I’m pretty sure that older generations remember brick-sized walkie talkies, which could also be used as dumbbells, considering their weight. Thankfully, this is not the case with the Retevis RT27 walkie talkies. They also feel durable and robust, which is definitely a huge plus. You don’t want to go hiking or climbing with a pair of plastic walkie talkies now, do you?

As with most walkie talkies, we are also interested in range. Considering the 0.5w transmission power, the range is ok, although not perfect. Please keep in mind that these are for shorter-range distances. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to check the exact maximum range.

The water-resistance feature is definitely a plus, although there have been some complaints about RT27s not surviving a storm downpour. On the plus side, the Retevis offers excellent customer service and in most scenarios they will send a replacement in short time (this is not a guarantee, it goes from case to case, of course).

If you wish to re-program the walkie talkies, you have to order the programming cable separately, as it is not included in the package.

Pros and Cons

Now that we are armed with the knowledge from above, let’s check out pros and cons.

Pros
  • Lightweight and durable
  • Mostly water-resistant
  • Heat-dissipation feature
  • Fall-resistant
  • Hands-free feature
  • Excellent customer service
Cons
  • Short to mid range
  • Re-programming cable not included

Conclusion

Our rating: 4.5 / 5

I’m quite pleased to say that the Retevis RT27 walkie talkies are compact, durable and lightweight machines with a lot of features. They are also quite affordable and easy to start with, which makes them beginner friendly. The biggest downside in my opinion is the short-to-mid range, but on the other hand, long-range walkie talkies are usually required by the military and professional outdoorsmen only.

If you don’t mind the cons, I say give them a shot and if you have any questions, from what I saw, their customer service is excellent and always willing to help.

Happy Chatting!
